Sensorial connections or the fact that what it is perceived through one of our senses interferes with the others -known as synaesthesia- is an exciting subject that has not only caught the attention of neuroscience and psychology, but also has become a fertile space for artistic experimentation since the second half of XIX century.
Synaesthesia, literally “joint sensation”, is the name given to the phenomenon of mixing the senses (hear colours, taste sounds, etc.). Based on examples taken both from different artistic expressions like music, painting or literature, and from the emerging popular culture, where we can classify some pre-cinematographic devices, we will approach the different perspectives of this phenomenon. Despite its enigmatic appearance, synaesthesia has been one of the main elements in some aesthetic practices of Modernity since the second half of XIX century.

Sonsoles Hernández
PhD in Musicology from the Université de Paris-Sorbonne and Universidad Complutense (Madrid), she specialised in synaesthesia at the end of the century with the monographs Sinestesias. Arte, literatura y música en el París fin de siglo, 1880-1900 (Abada, 2013) and Un martes en casa de Mallarmé. Redon, Debussy y Mallarmé encontrados (Editorial Complutense, 2010). She also completed research stays at the École de Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, at the Birkbeck College and at the University of Southern California, and she also published some articles in magazines like Visual studies, French cultural studies or The Senses & Society. Since 2010, Sonsoles Hernandez works as History of Arts teacher at the Universitat de les Illes Balears.

Blanca Rego
Fascinated by the cinema from childhood, Blanca Rego studied filmmaking. She soon moved away from classical narratives to experiment with non-traditional structures. Later on she studied animation and multimedia.
Her work focuses on the relationship between image and sound, with influences from both classical experimental cinema and contemporary electronic visual music. Her work as a researcher should also be highlighted, which includes collaborating on a regular basis as a writer and translator with different media and institutions.
Blanca Rego’s work has been viewed at numerous film and digital art festivals as well as in museums, art centres and galleries, such as the Iota Center (Los Angeles), the ZKM (Karlsruhe, Germany), Espacio Fundación Telefónica (Madrid), the Fundación Juan March (Madrid), the CA2M (Móstoles), the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, the MARCO (Vigo), etc.
